    Oscar Guerra

I was contacted by the Guerras yesterday to capture a headshot of Oscar who has decided to run for county commissioner in south Texas. This is my final week of freelance work in south Texas as a resident as I am relocating to Tennessee next week, so I’m taking on some very small jobs for fun and supplemental income to help with the move.

I was able to fit in their session this morning and they were happily surprised that I was able to bring my mobile photo studio to them. I recently adjusted my preference of composition to shoot in landscape but save for the square aspect ratio. This gives me a lot of freedom in editing to crop for various aspect ratios later, such as widescreen, square, and vertical.

My Canon 6D Mark II gives me a lot of megapixels to work with, and the quality is fantastic even when zoomed in quite a bit. This is how I also shoot my video work since I am often asked to later recompose a video for social media. “Capture wide, then crop in” is a throwback to medium format photography, but now with 4K and 6K sensor video cameras, and 24MP stills cameras, that axiom works very well in today’s commercial photography landscape.

I was able to get the photography delivered to the client same-day, and finished the flier for their meet and greet event happening next weekend. I even got the client an 8×10″ crop of the headshot so they could have a nice portrait! Great time!

    A&P Quality Care Medical

Austin, Texas, medical supplies provider A&P Quality Care Medical reached out to me in December 2020 to photograph new headshots of their Harlingen, Texas, branch employees. I needed to ensure my work matched the style of the established headshots taken for the company’s website, which I used as a reference.

On the morning of December 17, I brought my mobile photo studio — consisting of Interfit Honey Badger strobes and collapsible soft boxes — to A&P’s Harlingen branch office. I used a clean white wall, a single strobe, and a c-stand. The photo session was completed in about an hour. After working on the photos at my home office I delivered the final images to the client that afternoon.

My photography finally went live on the A&P website in February 2021.

    Javier Villarreal Law Firm

Back in 2009 I had the pleasure of photographing attorney Javier Villarreal for his law firm in Brownsville, Texas. The resulting “red gloves” photo was used extensively by the law firm ever since. It seemed you couldn’t travel from San Antonio to Brownsville without seeing the photo (“a South Texas attorney who fights!”) stamped on metro buses or highway billboards. In 2020, Javier decided to update his billboards sporting his seasoned veteran style, but retain the spirit of the original famous image.

In his Brownsville home, I set up my mobile photo studio. Together with Javier’s assistant Leslie and MUA Bri Gonzalez, we got to work on the photoshoot.

In the end, Javier was very pleased with the resulting images, and all his signage across south Texas are being updated with the new look.

My photo used in a billboard ad, spotted in Weslaco, TX.

I’m looking forward to updating his signature “red gloves” photos in 2030!
